Top 10 Mortal Kombat Kombatants

I was sat the other day, excitedly watching preview footage from next years new Mortal Kombat game, Mortal Kombat X and, it made me reminisce about the many an hour I used to spend embroiled in bloody kombat, this got my brain working (sort of) and, caused me to come up with a list of my Top 10 Mortal Kombat Kombatants... Allons-y!

For this list I didn't really set myself any rules, pretty much because, I couldn't think of any that needed adding... anyway, on with the list!

10 - Mileena

Quite possibly splitting opinion, my number 10 spot is taken by Kitana's evil doppelganger... Mileena. Originally portrayed as Kitana's twin, it was later revealed that Mileena was, in fact, a clone of her, designed for evil by Shang Tsung. A mixture of Edenian (Kitana's race) flesh and Tarkatan (hybrid human/demonic race) blood, Mileena posseses the beauty of Kitana, with the exception of a very sizeable mouth full of razor sharp teeth, but the unbalanced, savage nature of Tarkatan's, leaving her prone to fits of madness and savagery all whilst wearing impossibly small, and tight, clothes. Opinion on this choice are probably split, with some thinking I should have choosen Kitana over Mileena, however, Kitana's story, and character for that matter, is relatively boring plus, Mileena is a duel Sai wielding assassin, and duel Sai are cool... just look at Raphael *sings Turtles theme*... As an added bonus for fan boys and girls, Mileena has spawned many cosplay outings, the most notable of which is by the beautiful, 'Mistress of The Dorks' Adrianne Curry, if you don't follow her on Twitter, I suggest you get over there and hit follow!

09 - Kenshi

I'm not really a huge fan of the newer kombatants in the Mortal Kombat franchise, however, my number 9 spot goes to a fighter introduced in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance... Kenshi. Blinded as a result of Shang Tsung's trickery, Kenshi vowed to slay Shang Tsung and free the spirits of his ancient ancestors, all without the use of his eyes. Due to his inability to see and mastery of his other senses, Kenshi is very much like Marvel's Daredevil, however, he has the added bonus of having a huge Katana. Not only does Kenshi's story and in game ability get him onto my list, he also happens to be, quite possibly the best received of all the new kombatants added.

08 - Kung Lao

I think, when it comes to Mortal Kombat, you're either a fan of Liu Kang or Kung Lao so, as was the case with Mileena at number 10, my number 8 entry may split opinions, but here he is... Kung Lao. Descended from the Great Kung Lao, whose loss (and death) at the hands of Goro handed control of the Mortal Kombat tournament to Shang Tsung, Kung Lao's goal was to slay Goro, save Earthrealm and restore his family's honour. Kung Lao's weapon is a little different to most of the other kombatants and, I think it's this uniqeness that adds to his appeal, it also gives him some of the most recognisable fatalities of the games. His weapon, for those who don't know, is his hat... it takes inspiration from, the 1964 James Bond movie, Goldfinger, in which, Goldfinger's henchman, Oddjob, throws his special Bowler (Derby if you're American) Hat as a deadly weapon. Both Goldfinger and Oddjob turn up, quite frequently, on James Bond related favourite lists, mine included, and so, I think this has helped Kung Lao's popularity in the Mortal Kombat franchise.

07 - Cyrax

Number 7 on my list is a cyborg ninja... a cyborg ninja, what more could you want?... it's Cyrax. Introduced in Mortal Kombat 3, which happens to be one of the first games I owned on the Megadrive, Cyrax was a human who was automated, along with Sektor and Smoke. It's mission... to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before... sorry, that's not right, I got a little side tracked, where was I, ah yes... Cyrax's original mission is to hunt down Sub-Zero and turn him too, into a cyborg. Despite the fact there were 3 cyborg ninjas in Mortal Kombat 3, Cyrax was my go to cyborg, mainly because of his plethora of gadgets, but also because, something about a a cyborg using it's dreadlocks to fly like a helicopter amuses me.

06 - Reptile

Before I get into this entry, I want to say, I'm not a huge fan of the more repitilian appearence of the newer versions of my number 6 entry... Reptile. Included in the original Mortal Kombat as a unlockable, but sadly unplayable foe, Reptile proved such a hit he was quickly included in the second game as a playable character. The last known surviving member of a race known as Raptors, Reptile is enslaved by Shao Khan who, keeps him under control by promising the revival of his people in return for his loyalty. As the none playable foe in the first Mortal Kombat, Reptiles moves were a hybrid of Scorpion and Sub-Zeros moves. Despite how cool it would probably be to play as a hybrid of Scorpion and Sub-Zero, the makers decided, when they made Reptile playable, to give him his own set of moves with a more reptilian feel, with moves such as acid spit and camouflage. Reptile makes regular apperences on 'top Mortal Kombat Kombatant' lists as well as various 'hidden video game event' lists and, continues, to this day, to be a fan favourite.

05 - Shang Tsung

Based on the the character of Lo Pan, from the 1986 movie Big Trouble In Little China, my number 5 spot is taken by... Shang Tsung. Arch enemy of Liu Kang and right hand man to Shao Khan, Shang Tsung is a powerful evil sorcerer who absorbs the souls of all he defeats in order to maintain his power and youth. He is a demonic shapeshifter who has the ability to change his appearance, morphing into the other characters whilst retaining their abilities and movesets. Shang Tsung goal throughout most of the games is simple, he wants power, to stay youthful and, in some of the games, conquer the realms... so basically, he's a Bond villain. Despite having a limited array of unique special attacks, Shang Tsung provides you with some cool, ass kicking resources.

04 - Raiden

Number 4 on my list is occupied by a god so, I wouldn't be arguing if I were you... it's Raiden. Let's quickly get this out of the way, in the original Mortal Kombat, Raiden was a bit of a jerk, we've all had rough days, he must have had one leading into Mortal Kombat. As I mentioned, Raiden is a god, a Thunder God to be precise, a little like Thor, except without Mjolnir, or Chris Hemsworth's arms... oh, he does have a Conical Asian Hat though. As well as having his god status, Raiden is also the protecter of Earth Realm, a role that has played a major part in the Mortal Kombat games, so really, without Raiden, there'd be no Mortal Kombat? Also, Raiden's god status offers up a plethora of fun moves involving flight, electricity and, teleportation, not to mention, he also a host a great finishers... and, did I mention, he's a god!

03 - Baraka

Here we are, the top 3 already! At number 3, I have chosen... Baraka. Not to be confused with an orangy vitamin supplement that is good for you, Baraka is most certainly bad for your health. Introduced in Mortal Kombat 2, Baraka is part of the race called Tarkatan (the not so pretty half of Mileena's genetic makeup). If I'm honest, I think the main reason for my love for this Kombatant stems from the fact that, he's like a fugly, toothy, Wolverine... Like most others of his race, Baraka possesses long retractable blades extending from his forarms and a mouth, that I suspect, would be a dentist's nightmare. As a battle hungry race, the Tarkatan, Baraka included, are warriors in the service of Shao Khan. Baraka's speed, and a satisfying array of moves, especially ones utilising his blades, make him a great character to take into kombat, I wouldn't however, advise trying to have a kiss, or a fondle with him... seriously, look at the teeth, blades and spikes!

02 - Sub-Zero

I could be wrong, however, I'm relatively certain my number 2 kombatant has made an appearance in every Mortal Kombat game... it's Sub-Zero. Originally-ish a member of the Lin Kuei (he, and his brother, were kidnapped by them as children) Sub-Zero (Bi-Han) was revealed to have died during the events of the first game. From the second game onwards, Bi-Han's younger brother, Kuai Liang takes on the mantle of Sub-Zero in order to avenge his brother... Now that's out of the way, I shall talk about them as though they are one person, which they are... Sub-Zero! Sub-Zero, as you probably already know, or, you can tell by the name, possesses the ability to control ice in it's many forms. This control manifests itself in various ways, including, freezing his opponent, freezing the ground, creating an ice clone and, creating a sword made of ice to name but a few. At the risk of sounding like I'm intentionally making a bad pun, Sub-Zero, and his kombat moves are, to this day, still as cool as the first time you see him. Even if you have never seen or played Mortal Kombat, chances are, you may have heard Sub-Zero mentioned before when outraged parent groups demand Mortal Kombat be banned (their nowhere near 18 year old children play a 18+ rated game and it's the makers fault?) because of things such as, Sub-Zero's spine rip fatality... as Mortal Kombat finishing moves go, Sub-Zero's spine rip is, legen... wait for it... dary!

01 - Scorpion

Here we are, my number 1 in my top 10 Mortal Kombat Kombatants. For anyone who knows the franchise, this will probably be fairly obvious after my number 2 pick... it's Scorpion. Originally, Scorpion was merely a colour variation of Sub-Zero, put into the game to make up the numbers. Since then, he has gone on to become the franchises most recognisable kombatant. He also happens to sport, some of the games most iconic moves... 'get over here' and finishers. As well as his iconic moves, such as his notorious harpoon (that was the get over here reference for anyone who doesn't know) and, his recognisable appearance, Scorpion also has some of the games most engaging storylines, with tales of love, loss, and revenge. You would think, in a game comprising of quite a few ninja assassins, it would be easy for Scorpion to get lost in the mix, however, he doesn't. It's this ability to not only stand out from the crowd, but to surpass them by quite a way, that not only puts him at the top of my list, but also the top of most lists on the internet regarding top Mortal Kombat kombatants.

Who is your favourite Mortal Kombat Kombatant? Who is your least favourite? Leave me your thoughts below.
